(Vatican Radio) A bishop in Scotland has high hopes for his diocese as a new fundraising initiative was recently launched at his cathedral. Bishop John Keenan is encouraging the faithful of the Diocese of Paisley to become ‘Friends’ of certain diocesan projects in a bid to combat a £3 million (€3.5 million) deficit. Bishop Keenan explained in a letter read out at all Masses in St Mirin’s Cathedral that the cause for the deficit is not surprising. “It is the same deadly combination of rising costs and falling income that you know all too well from your own home finances.” The bishop emphasised that a change in culture is needed. In his letter, he tells the lay faithful that he would rather put his trust in his own people than in professional fundraisers. If his desire for a deficit-free diocese is to be realised, then annual savings worth £300,000 must be found. He added that the “bulk of our efforts to eradicate the deficit will come from fundraising.”
Synod Thanks and Update. Can I thank all the priests who have so far hosted the Synod Task Groups. Both Denis and I have been really impressed and encouraged by the preparation you put into making your groups welcome in your homes and in the pastoral guidance you gave them as they moved to elect officers. Each group is working on the Synod Document to gather, focus and prioritise Charter points and begin thinking of initiatives that will help parishes, schools and groups move them forward. The Chair of the Steering Group is John Couttie, a parishioner in St. Fillan’s known to many of you. He is working hard with Denis and myself to see, from Task Groups feedback, what are emerging as your central themes and priorities. In this role John will have the lead lay role in our Synod process. Other members of the Steering Group are: Brian Blacklaw, Joseph Bonner, Eleanor de Murro, Linda Polonis, Simon Keenan (no relation), Michael Morris, Jacqueline Stewart, John Kelly, John O’Brien, Caroline Lyall, Stephen McCauley, Andy Milwaine, June Clunie, Philomena Muggins and Jackie Gillespie. Once again thanks for being so supportive both of our synod and as we begin in earnest its implementation.

Many Muslim parents send their children to church schools because they prepare young people for “life in modern Britain”, a senior figure in the Church of England has said. The Rev Nigel Genders said that church schools offered a “deeply Christian” education yet were attractive to families of other religions because they took faith seriously. Mr Genders, chief education officer at the Church of England, which has about 4,500 primary schools, said that they would never drop their religious character even though more children from non-Christian families were attending them.
It was a slow day for the busy fire station in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, when the call came in on November 11, 2011. Fireflghter Marc Hadden, who worked with the medical unit, was eating dinner in the middle of his 24-hour shift when he had to hop in the ambulance and head out to the emergency. He and his partner found a woman in labor, and as soon as they got her in the ambulance she was ready to give birth. Hadden took charge — his first time ever being in charge of a delivery in 20 years of his work, according to a story on CBS News. Little did the firefighter know at that moment that he was helping his own daughter take her first breath.
(Vatican Radio) “Without women, there is no harmony in the world.” That was the message of Pope Francis in his homily at the morning Mass at the Casa Santa Marta. At the center of his reflection was creation of woman, as told in Genesis. Men and women are not equal; the one is not superior to the other. But it is the woman, and not the man, who brings that harmony which makes the world a beautiful place.

SCOTLAND'S Catholic church has launched its biggest recruitment drive for the priesthood in generations amid ongoing concerns over a rapidly ageing clergy. As the number of priests in parts of Scotland is predicted to drop by 100 in the next two decades, young men in parishes across the country will be encouraged into the vocation as the church seeks to attract its next generation to the pulpit.
