Sign up to watch "The Life & Mission of the late Fr Tommy Greenan" introduced by companion Fr Henry McLaughlin
Tommy Greenan went to El Salvador just after the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Romero by a death squad on 24th March 1980. Archbishop Romero was called the ‘Voice of the Voiceless’ and his death was followed by the abduction and murder of thousands of El Salvadoreans, including babies and children.
The United Nations estimates that more than 75,000 people were killed.
Tommy very closely accompanied the poor, shared their lives and what they were going through. He would reflect deeply on a particular incident or meeting and write a short story where they were the protagonists. Soon after he would send the story to Scotland.
After Tommy’s early death in 2020 his stories were collected and published in The Song of the Poor.
On Thursday 8th May, at St Mary's Cathedral - Edinburgh, there was a Celebration of Tommy's life and friends and family shared their memories of Tommy and how his acclaimed book The Song of the Poor came to be published. Stories from the book were also shared.
We will share an edited recording of this celebration and then have the opportunity to dialogue with Tommy's friend and companion in El Salvador Fr Henry McLaughlin.
