As the Bishop of the Diocese of Paisley, I welcome today’s publication of the McLellan Report. The bishops of Scotland accept in full the report’s recommendations and on behalf of us all Archbishop Tartaglia made a public apology at Mass this afternoon in St Andrew’s Cathedral, Glasgow. http://www.rcag.org.uk/index.php/item/511-mclellan-commission
The McLellan Report, which the Scottish bishops commissioned a few years ago, to report on the robustness of our safeguarding procedures and offer us recommendations, has now published its findings at a media conference. This independent report from Dr. McLellan and his colleagues has given us a good vision and strategy for the ongoing improvement of our safeguarding ethos in the Church and the bishops have unanimously accepted all its recommendations in full. https://www.mclellancommission.co.uk/
We are as determined as ever to do all we can to ensure that the Church is the safest place possible for any vulnerable person, working for survivors of abuse to find the fullest justice from the Church as well as ongoing healing for themselves. We must renew our sorrow for all the harm caused by this shameful sinfulness and be completely committed to further reform and renewal. We should live these days in prayer, penance and renewed hope.
